"Suppose, for example, that the city of Sparta were to become deserted and that only the temples and foundations of buildings remained, I think that future generations would, as time passed, find it very difficult to believe that the place had really been as powerful as it was represented to be."
--Thucydides.
History of Lakonia:
Up until the time of Alexander the Great, Sparta (Sparti) and Athens (Athina) were the most powerful city-states in Greece. In 146 B.C., Sparta was taken over by the Romans. During the Byzantine era, Lakonia was a province of the theme of the Peloponnese and suffered numerous attacks by barbarians. In the 13th century, it fell to the Franks only to return in 1262 to the Byzantines who made their headquarters at the Byzantine site of Mistras. Two centuries later in 1460, the Turks marched against Lakonia and finally conquered the district in the mid 17th century. The area was liberated in 1828.
Central Lakonia:
In Central Lakonia, you will find Sparta (Sparti), the capital of the prefecture. A simple city, built in the middle of the Evrotas river valley, in the same site where the ancient city stood. The plain of Lakonia spreads out around Sparta, with many small, but beautiful villages. A few kilometers away from the center of Sparta are the Taigetos mountains. Snowy peaks, rocks, plateaus and ravines, olive groves, castles and Byzantine churches are spread all over this beautiful countryside. The succession of villages makes you want to explore. Every location is unique.
